New Years Eve in Chicago
December 31, 2002 - January 1, 2003

Arrived at The Palmer House with plenty of time for our passengers to wander downtown, check out Marshall Field's window which was still decorated, attend 5 PM mass at a nearby church, or do whatever they chose.   We could not have ordered better weather on December 31 in Chicago!  It was high 30's...maybe even 40 degrees.  We met at 7:30 PM for a splendid dinner at The Big Downtown in the Palmer House.  We then walked 1 1/2 blocks to the Chicago Symphony Hall for a concert with the Count Basie Orchestra.  They played wonderful light jazz - extremely enjoyed by everyone.  Parts of the concert, including the stroke of midnight, were live on National Public Radio's "Toast To The Nation".  At midnight, they played Auld Lang Syne with a balloon drop.  Everyone stood and swayed to the music, and afterward, all of the folks turned to their neighbors around them to wish them a Happy New Year and shake hands.  As we exited, they had complimentary champagne in the lobby.  We walked outdoors to return to the hotel and the fireworks from Navy Pier were still going strong as we stood on the sidewalk to watch them.  We then proceeded back to the hotel for the night.  In the morning, everyone was free to have a lovely full American Breakfast Buffet at their leisure.  Some of the passengers proceeded to the Museum of Science and Industry for a couple of hours.  A few stayed behind to watch the Bowl games and we returned to get them before leaving for home.  What an all around lovely group of people!!!!  Here are some pictures of the people who spent a splendid New Year's Eve together.
