Greenfield Village & The
Henry Ford*
Monday, July 9, 2012
The Henry Ford
Museum started out as Henry Ford’s personal collection of historic objects,
which he began collecting as far back as 1906. Today the 12 acre site is
primarily a collection of antique machinery, pop culture items, automobiles,
locomotives, aircraft, and such items as an Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, the 1961
Lincoln Continental in which President John F. Kennedy was riding when he was
assassinated, and the rocking chair from Ford’s Theater in which President
Abraham Lincoln was sitting when he was shot.
Greenfield Village shows how
Americans lived and worked since the founding of our country, including
buildings from the 17th Century to the present, many of which are
staffed by costumed interpreters who conduct period tasks such as cooking,
farming and sewing. If you wish, you may opt to take a ride through the village
in an authentic Model-T. What fun! There are several eateries available at both
- on your own.

Jackson, MI Historic Prison
Tour*
Wednesday, September 5, 2012
This
tour begins at Michigan's First State Prison (1838-1934), which built Jackson
into a leading industrial town during the height of the Industrial Revolution.
Michigan's first state prison, once the world's largest walled prison, is now
the Armory Arts Village, a resident artists' community listed on MSN in the top
ten most unique buildings in which to live. The 25' stone and granite wall with
guard turrets surround it. Visitors hear fascinating history, tales of prison
life, colorful inmates, punishments, reforms, and see old solitary cells. Then
visit artists in their studios built out of prison cells and see how this old
brick and mortar building has gone from historic prison to artistic vision.
Lunch is served at The Old Prison Café. No bread and water served here! You
will choose from The Snitch (chicken salad on a croissant), The Burglar’s Beef
(Bistro roast beef on a Kaiser bun), or The Hamshank Redemption (Ham, salami,
pepperoni, marinated onions, lettuce, provolone on a baguette), along with a
seasonal homemade salad, dessert, and a beverage.
We
then board our bus to the fully intact Seven-Block (1934-2007), on the closed
area of the Southern Michigan State Prison. This is where the inmates from the
first prison went when it closed in 1934. Robert DeNiro filmed the movie
"Stone" at Seven-Block. Hear tales of convicts, wardens, correction
officers, quarantine, reform, a helicopter escape, and Seven-Block's role during
the Detroit Riots. We then return to Armory Arts Village to browse there and at
Art 634: boutiques, art studios, and exhibits.
$97.00 per person
Includes:
Historic prison tour, lunch, motor coach transportation and driver tip.
